Growth Mindset

The growth mindset is a very intriguing subject to me. I had never heard about about Carol Dweck or the "growth or fixed mindsets" before today however, I had always been told by an old cheer coach of mine that are mindset determines what we can do. For example when someone would be too scared to try a new tumbling skill, she would say "What you think will happen, will, so do not go into it thinking you are going to fail or that is exactly what you will do." This differs slightly from the growth mindset but I see a connection between the two.

I personally would like to believe that I fall in the middle of a growth and fixed mindset, if that is at all possible.  All through school it was continuously drilled in my head that I must get good grades in order to show that I am capable and smart, so I did exactly that. However there were many instances that I had a growth mindset, for example, I decided to push myself by enrolling in college level courses during my last two years of high school for a more challenging work load. I also continue to set high goals for myself knowing that they may not all succeed but would be beyond worth it in the end if they do. I'd like to believe that I am on my way to having a growth mindset, but sometimes ignoring society, and what I have been taught all my life, is hard.

My personal learning goals every semester normally is the basic "Straight A's" but this semester I would like to add to them. This semester I want to walk out of all my classes knowing that I learned, not only what was needed to pass the class, but also what is needed to improve myself.

Beginning the summer before my junior year of high school I began taking concurrent classes at Northern Oklahoma college, in order to get some of my basic courses out of the way. By the time my senior year rolled around I was on track to actually receive my associates degree 20 days before my high school diploma. In March of 2020 my plans, as well as everyone else's, took a turn. The dreaded COVID took away both of the days I had worked so hard for. Although both of my graduations were taken away from me, I still finished the year and received my degree in Biology Pre-Med, I then went on to attended OU. Being that this year was my first year of college out of high school, I began as a "freshman",  starting with 60 credit hours classifying me as a junior, and changing my major to Psychology Pre-Med now puts me as a sophomore. All very confusing, I know! I have always been the type of pe
